Network Support Engineer
It is the responsibility of the network support engineer to install, maintain and support the systems that allow employees to operate and communicate with each other on a daily basis .
Work Responsibilities
An engineers responsibility depends on the type of network. There are 4 major networks - Local Area Networks (LANS), Metropolitan Area Networks (MANS), Wide Area Networks (WANS) and Global Area Networks (GANS). Typically an engineers work activities would include maintaining and supporting the network. It is the engineers responsibility to set up user accounts permission and passwords and to manage email and anti spam. They check for any security issues and install anti virus protection. The engineer will monitor network usage and provide support to the users. They may also supervise the helpdesk to ensure all queries and faults are resolved. Engineers ensure industry standards are met and provide solutions to business related problems.
Skills Required
As a network support engineer its important to be good at problem solving. An expeienced engineer should have knowledge about the systems under their control such as routers and switches which must be working properly for the users to be able to user their PCs and communicate effectively.
Work Hours and Environment
Although mostly a 09:00 to 17:30 job, the work hours can vary depending on the issues. They may also work in shifts. A network support engineer typically works out of one office location but may be required to visit other locations as well to ensure everything is running well.
Salary
As a network support engineer you can earn anywhere between £ 18,000 and £ 32,000+ depending on the level. |
